Sarah Orne Jewett (1849–1909) was an American novelist and short-story writer, a central figure of New England regional writing. The daughter of a country doctor in South Berwick, Maine, she often accompanied her father on his rounds and drew on that intimate knowledge of village and coastal life in Deephaven, A White Heron and The Country of the Pointed Firs. She shared much of her adult life with Annie Adams Fields, widow of the Boston publisher, in a circle of writers and artists. Her quiet, precise art influenced younger writers, especially Willa Cather.
