Samuel Dill (1844–1924) was an Irish classical scholar and historian of Roman society. Born in County Down, he studied at Queen's College Belfast and Oxford, was a fellow of Corpus Christi College, High Master of Manchester Grammar School and from 1890 professor of Greek at Queen's College Belfast. His reputation rests on three studies of Roman social life, Roman Society in the Last Century of the Western Empire, Roman Society from Nero to Marcus Aurelius and the posthumous Roman Society in Gaul in the Merovingian Age, which drew on letters, inscriptions and satire to describe how ordinary Romans lived and believed. He was knighted in 1909.
