Samuel-Auguste Tissot (1728–1797) was a Swiss physician who became one of the most widely read medical writers of the eighteenth century. After studying at Montpellier, he practiced in Lausanne and later taught at the University of Pavia. His Avis au peuple sur sa santé, published in 1761, gave plain medical advice to country people and was translated into many languages. He also wrote on the health of men of letters and of people of fashion, on nervous diseases, and an influential treatise on masturbation that shaped medical opinion for generations. He corresponded with Rousseau and treated patients from across Europe.
