Robert Hoe

Robert Hoe (1839–1909) was an American manufacturer of printing presses and a celebrated book collector. He headed R. Hoe and Company of New York, the firm founded by his grandfather, which built the rotary and web presses that made large newspapers possible, and he wrote a short history of the printing press. Hoe gathered one of the largest private libraries of his time, rich in illuminated manuscripts and early printed books, which was sold at auction after his death, and he was one of the founders of the Grolier Club of New York, devoted to the arts of the book.
