Roald Amundsen (1872–1928) was a Norwegian polar explorer, the first person to lead an expedition to the South Pole. He gave up medical studies for the sea, served on the Belgian Antarctic Expedition of 1897 to 1899, and between 1903 and 1906 became the first to navigate the Northwest Passage, in the small ship Gjøa. Using Nansen's ship Fram, he turned south and reached the South Pole with four companions on December 14, 1911, ahead of Robert Falcon Scott. He later flew over the North Pole in the airship Norge in 1926 and disappeared in 1928 during an air search for the crew of the Italia.
