Richard Bagwell (1840–1918) was an Irish historian and landowner from Clonmel, County Tipperary. Educated at Harrow and Christ Church, Oxford, and called to the bar, he devoted his life to the history of English rule in Ireland while taking part in local government as a magistrate and county officer. His Ireland under the Tudors (1885–1890) and Ireland under the Stuarts and during the Interregnum (1909–1916) are detailed political and military narratives based on state papers. A unionist, he also served as a commissioner of national education, and his house near Clonmel was burned during the Irish Civil War, a few years after his death.
