Rhoda Broughton (1840–1920) was a novelist born in Denbigh, Wales, the daughter of a clergyman and a niece of the Gothic writer Sheridan Le Fanu, who serialized her first novels in his Dublin University Magazine. Not Wisely but Too Well and Cometh Up as a Flower, both published in 1867, were thought shockingly frank about young women's feelings and made her famous; she wrote some twenty-five more, including Red as a Rose Is She, Nancy and Doctor Cupid. She remarked late in life that she had begun her career as Zola and finished it as Charlotte Yonge. She never married and lived mainly in Oxford.
