Raoul Whitfield

Raoul Whitfield (1896–1945) was an American writer born in New York who spent part of his boyhood in the Philippines, flew with the Army Air Service in France during the First World War and worked as a reporter in Pittsburgh before turning to the pulps. He wrote aviation stories such as The Old Lady Flies for Battle Aces and other magazines, and became one of the leading contributors to Black Mask alongside Dashiell Hammett, publishing the hard-boiled novels Green Ice and Death in a Bowl and, as Ramon Decolta, a series about the Filipino detective Jo Gar. Tuberculosis and a troubled private life ended his career in the mid-1930s.
