Percival Leigh (1813–1889) was an English comic writer. Trained as a surgeon at St. Bartholomew's Hospital, he gave up medicine for literature and became close friends with the illustrator John Leech, who drew the pictures for his Comic English Grammar and Comic Latin Grammar. He joined the staff of Punch in its first years and remained there for nearly half a century, known to colleagues as "the Professor" for his learning. With Richard Doyle he produced Manners and Customs of ye Englyshe, accompanied by Mr. Pips hys Diary, a parody of Pepys. His humor is gentle, punning and erudite.
