Mrs. Alex. McVeigh Miller was the name under which Mittie Frances Clarke Point Miller (1850–1937), born in Virginia and later resident in West Virginia, published more than eighty novels of romance and melodrama for the cheap story papers and dime-novel series of George Munro, Street & Smith and others. Her heroines are poor, beautiful and persecuted, her villains relentless and her plots full of secret marriages, lost wills, drugged sleeps and wrongful burials, delivered in short chapters with cliffhanging titles. The Bride of the Tomb and Dainty's Cruel Rivals are typical. She was one of the most widely read American women writers of her day and is almost entirely forgotten.
