Maurice Hewlett (1861–1923) was an English novelist, poet and essayist. Trained as a lawyer, he held the post of Keeper of Land Revenue Records until the success of The Forest Lovers, a medieval romance, in 1898 allowed him to write full time. Richard Yea-and-Nay, about Richard the Lionheart, and The Queen's Quair, about Mary, Queen of Scots, confirmed his reputation as the leading historical novelist of the Edwardian years, and he later turned to modern comedies such as Open Country, Rest Harrow and Love and Lucy. He regarded his verse as his real work, above all The Song of the Plow.
