Matilda Joslyn Gage (1826–1898) was an American suffragist, abolitionist and freethinker, born in Cicero, New York, in a house that sheltered fugitive slaves. She joined the women's rights movement at the Syracuse convention of 1852 and worked for decades beside Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, serving as president of the National Woman Suffrage Association and co-writing the first three volumes of the History of Woman Suffrage. Breaking with the movement when it allied with conservative Christian temperance groups, she founded the Woman's National Liberal Union and published Woman, Church and State in 1893. Her son-in-law was L. Frank Baum, author of The Wizard of Oz.
