Julius Rosenbaum was a nineteenth-century German physician and medical historian who taught at the University of Halle. His best-known work, a history of venereal disease in classical antiquity first published in 1839, combined medical knowledge with close philological reading of Greek and Latin authors to argue that such diseases were known to the ancients, and to examine the sexual customs of the ancient world. The book went through several editions in German and was later translated into English as The Plague of Lust. He also wrote on the history of medicine more generally.
