Joseph Strutt (1749–1802) was an English engraver, antiquary and writer. Trained as an engraver and at the Royal Academy schools, he spent years studying medieval manuscripts in the British Museum and published illustrated works on English history and customs drawn from them, including The Regal and Ecclesiastical Antiquities of England, a study of the dress and habits of the English, and a biographical dictionary of engravers. His Sports and Pastimes of the People of England, published in 1801, remains a classic. An unfinished novel of his, Queenhoo Hall, was completed by Walter Scott.
