Joseph McCabe (1867–1955) was an English writer and lecturer, a former Franciscan priest who became one of the most prolific advocates of rationalism and secularism. Ordained in 1890, he left the Church in 1896 and described his experience in Twelve Years in a Monastery. He then wrote more than two hundred books and many pamphlets on religion, history, science and philosophy, translated works by Ernst Haeckel, and lectured widely in Britain, America and Australia. His histories, including Crises in the History of the Papacy and books on the Jesuits and Saint Augustine, are sharply critical of the Catholic Church.
