John Horace Round (1854–1928) was an English historian of the Norman and Angevin periods and a formidable controversialist. Independently wealthy, educated at Balliol under Stubbs, he never held an academic post but produced a stream of articles on Domesday Book, feudal tenure, genealogy and the peerage, collected in Feudal England (1895), The Commune of London (1899), Studies in Peerage and Family History and Peerage and Pedigree. His essay on the introduction of knight service into England and his demolition of E. A. Freeman's account of the Battle of Hastings reshaped the subject. He contributed the Domesday sections to many volumes of the Victoria County History.
