John Henry Jowett

John Henry Jowett (1863–1923) was an English Congregationalist minister and a renowned preacher. Born in Halifax, Yorkshire, he studied at Edinburgh and Oxford, and in 1895 succeeded R. W. Dale at Carr's Lane Chapel in Birmingham. In 1911 he crossed the Atlantic to become pastor of the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York, then returned to London in 1918 as minister of Westminster Chapel. His sermons and devotional books, including The Passion for Souls and My Daily Meditation for the Circling Year, were read widely on both sides of the Atlantic for their polished style and warm, practical piety.
