John Eleazer Remsburg (1848–1919) was an American freethought writer and lecturer. Born in Ohio, he worked as a teacher and school superintendent in Kansas before devoting himself to lecturing across the country for the freethought and secular movement. His books include Thomas Paine, the Apostle of Liberty, Six Historic Americans, which argued that founders such as Paine, Jefferson and Franklin were not orthodox Christians, and The Christ (1909), a critical review of the evidence for the existence of Jesus that includes his often-cited list of silent ancient writers.
