Jeanne-Marie Bouvier de la Motte Guyon (1648–1717), known as Madame Guyon, was a French Catholic mystic and writer. Married at fifteen to a much older man and widowed at twenty-eight, she devoted herself to a life of prayer and spread a teaching of inner surrender to God, set out in her Short and Easy Method of Prayer. Her ideas were condemned as Quietism, and despite the support of Archbishop Fénelon she was imprisoned for years, including in the Bastille. She spent her last years in Blois. Her autobiography and writings were later admired by many Protestants.
