James Harvey Robinson (1863–1936) was an American historian and a founder of the movement known as the New History. Educated at Harvard and Freiburg, he taught European history at the University of Pennsylvania and then for many years at Columbia University, where he argued that history should study the whole of past human life, its ideas, science and social conditions, rather than only politics and war. His textbooks, beginning with An Introduction to the History of Western Europe, reached a vast school and college audience. He left Columbia in 1919 to help found the New School for Social Research and wrote The Mind in the Making.
