James Ford Rhodes (1848–1927) was an American historian. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he made a fortune in the coal and iron business, partly in partnership with his brother-in-law Mark Hanna, and retired at thirty-seven to devote himself to history. His History of the United States from the Compromise of 1850, published in seven volumes between 1893 and 1906 and later extended, offered a detailed, judicious narrative of the coming of the Civil War and Reconstruction, and he won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1918 for a one-volume history of the war. He settled in Boston, among the historians of New England.
