Sir Jagadis Chandra Bose (1858–1937) was an Indian physicist and plant physiologist. Born in Bengal, he studied at Calcutta, Cambridge and London and in 1885 returned to teach physics at Presidency College, Calcutta. In the 1890s he did pioneering work on short radio waves, devising detectors and demonstrating wireless signaling, but declined to patent most of his inventions. He then turned to the responses of plants and metals to stimuli and invented the crescograph to measure plant growth. Knighted in 1917, he founded the Bose Institute in Calcutta the same year. He also wrote one of the earliest works of Bengali science fiction.
