Jakob Schipper

Jakob Schipper (1842–1915) was a German scholar of English philology. After teaching at Königsberg, he became professor of English at the University of Vienna, where he trained a generation of students. His major work, Englische Metrik, a history of English versification from Old English to modern times, appeared in several volumes from 1881 and was later condensed and published in English by the Clarendon Press as A History of English Versification in 1910. He also edited Middle English texts and wrote on the poet William Dunbar.
