John Holland Rose (1855–1942) was an English historian of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic era. After years of teaching in university extension programs, he became a lecturer at Cambridge and in 1919 the first Vere Harmsworth Professor of Naval History there. His Life of Napoleon I (1902), which drew on British official records, became the standard English biography of the emperor, and he followed it with a two-volume life of William Pitt, William Pitt and National Revival and William Pitt and the Great War. He also wrote on the development of the European nations and was a joint editor of the Cambridge History of the British Empire.
