Joseph Barber Lightfoot (1828–1889) was an English biblical scholar and bishop. Born in Liverpool and educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, he became Hulsean Professor of Divinity in 1861 and Lady Margaret's Professor in 1875, and in 1879 was consecrated Bishop of Durham, where he reorganized the diocese and trained ordinands in his own house. His commentaries on Galatians (1865), Philippians (1868) and Colossians and Philemon (1875) combined exact philology with historical imagination, and his edition of the Apostolic Fathers defended the early date of the New Testament writings against German criticism. He was a member of the committee that produced the Revised Version.
