John Augustine Zahm (1851–1921) was an American Catholic priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross, scientist and author. Born in Ohio, he taught science at the University of Notre Dame and argued in Evolution and Dogma (1896) that evolution was compatible with Catholic faith; the book was withdrawn from circulation under pressure from Rome. He traveled widely in South America, helped plan Theodore Roosevelt's expedition of 1913 and 1914, and wrote travel books such as Up the Orinoco and Down the Magdalena under the pen name H. J. Mozans, which he also used for Woman in Science (1913).
