Henry Harland (1861–1905) was an American writer born in New York who began under the name Sidney Luska with realistic novels about Jewish immigrant life in the city, then moved to London in 1889 and reinvented himself as an aesthete. He was literary editor of The Yellow Book from 1894 to 1897, with Aubrey Beardsley as art editor. The Cardinal's Snuff-Box in 1900 made him a popular success with its sunlit Italian comedy of a novelist courting a duchess, and The Lady Paramount and My Friend Prospero followed in the same vein. He suffered from tuberculosis for years and died at San Remo at forty-four.
