Harry Vardon (1870–1937) was a golfer from Jersey in the Channel Islands, one of the dominant players of the game's early professional era. He learned golf as a caddie on the common land at Grouville, became a professional in England and won the Open Championship six times between 1896 and 1914, a record that still stands, as well as the United States Open in 1900. His overlapping grip became known as the Vardon grip, and his tours of America did much to popularize the game there. He wrote The Complete Golfer and How to Play Golf.
