Sir Harry Hamilton Johnston (1858–1927) was a British explorer, colonial administrator, naturalist, painter and writer. Trained as an artist, he traveled in Tunisia and the Congo, led an expedition to Kilimanjaro in 1884 and then served as a consul and commissioner in the Niger delta, Mozambique, British Central Africa and Uganda, where he was a chief agent in the partition of Africa he later came to question. He wrote some forty books on African history, languages, botany and zoology, discovered the okapi for Western science, and in his sixties turned to fiction, with The Gay-Dombeys, a sequel to Dickens, Mrs. Warren's Daughter and The Man Who Did the Right Thing.
