George MacDonald (1824–1905) was a Scottish author and minister. Born at Huntly in Aberdeenshire, he was educated at Aberdeen and became a Congregational pastor, but his unorthodox views cost him his pulpit and he turned to writing. His adult fantasies Phantastes (1858) and Lilith (1895), his fairy tales for children, At the Back of the North Wind (1871), The Princess and the Goblin (1872), and his many Scottish novels earned him the admiration of Lewis Carroll, whose Alice was first tried out on the MacDonald children, and later of C. S. Lewis, who called him his master. He had eleven children and spent his later years in Italy.
