George Milbry Gould (1848–1922) was an American ophthalmologist, medical editor and lexicographer. Born in Maine, he fought in the Civil War as a boy, studied at Ohio Wesleyan and Harvard and was briefly a Unitarian minister before taking his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He edited the Medical News, the Philadelphia Medical Journal and American Medicine, compiled a series of widely used medical dictionaries, and with Walter L. Pyle wrote Anomalies and Curiosities of Medicine, an encyclopedic collection of rare and extraordinary cases. He also published Biographic Clinics, arguing that the ailments of De Quincey, Carlyle, Darwin and others were caused by eyestrain.
