George Lyman Kittredge (1860–1941) was an American scholar of English literature who taught at Harvard from 1888 to 1936 and dominated the study of Chaucer, Shakespeare and the ballads in the United States for a generation. His books include Chaucer and His Poetry, A Study of Gawain and the Green Knight, Witchcraft in Old and New England and editions of Shakespeare's plays; with his teacher Francis James Child he completed the great collection of English and Scottish popular ballads. He also wrote school textbooks, among them An Advanced English Grammar with Frank Edgar Farley. Formidable in the classroom and legendary for his learning, he never took a doctorate.
