George A. Barton

George Aaron Barton (1859–1942) was a Canadian-born American scholar of the Bible and the ancient Near East. Raised in Quebec, he became a minister in the Society of Friends and studied at Haverford and Harvard. He taught biblical literature and Semitic languages at Bryn Mawr College for many years and later at the University of Pennsylvania, and served as director of the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem. His books include A Sketch of Semitic Origins, Archaeology and the Bible and studies and translations of Sumerian and Babylonian inscriptions, which he used to illuminate the history and religion of the Bible.
