George William Septimus Piesse was an English chemist and perfumer in Victorian London, a partner in the perfumery house of Piesse and Lubin. His book The Art of Perfumery (1855), which describes the extraction of scents from plants and animals and gives formulas for perfumes, soaps, creams and other toiletries, became a standard manual of the trade and went through several editions. Piesse is also remembered for a curious theory: he arranged scents on a musical scale, an odophone, believing that odors, like notes, could harmonize, and the perfumers' use of the word note is often traced to him.
