G. G. Coulton (1858–1947) was an English historian of the Middle Ages. Educated at Cambridge, he was ordained but lost his faith, taught in schools for many years and did not obtain a university post until he was past fifty, when he became a lecturer and fellow at St. John's College, Cambridge. His books, written for a wide public from close study of the sources, include From St. Francis to Dante, Chaucer and His England, Five Centuries of Religion, Life in the Middle Ages and Medieval Panorama. A tireless controversialist, he fought a long public battle with Catholic apologists, Hilaire Belloc among them, over the realities of medieval religious life.
