G. A. Henty (1832–1902) was an English war correspondent and the most popular writer of historical adventure stories for boys in the late Victorian period. After Cambridge he served in the commissariat during the Crimean War, then reported for the Standard from the Austro-Italian war, Garibaldi's campaigns, the Abyssinian and Ashanti expeditions and the Franco-Prussian War. From the 1870s he produced two or three books a year, some hundred and twenty in all, including With Clive in India, Under Drake's Flag, The Dash for Khartoum and With Cochrane the Dauntless, each setting a resourceful English youth amid a real campaign. He also edited the boys' paper Union Jack.
