Frank Everett Stevens was an Illinois lawyer and historian who devoted thirty years to collecting material on the Black Hawk War of 1832. Practicing law in northern Illinois, he sought out survivors of the campaign, their families and their papers, gathering muster rolls, letters, commissions and more than three hundred portraits, and published the results in The Black Hawk War, Including a Review of Black Hawk's Life (1903), still the most detailed account of the conflict. He was active in the Illinois State Historical Society, which published his later studies of the Illinois frontier.
