Educated at Harvard and Harvard Law School, he practiced in New York, where he served as an assistant district attorney and became one of the city's best-known courtroom advocates. His book The Art of Cross-Examination, published in 1903, drew on his own trials and on famous cases in Britain and America, and became a classic still read by lawyers. He also wrote Day in Court, Gentlemen of the Jury and other books on advocacy and trial practice.
