Flora Annie Webster Steel

Flora Annie Steel (1847–1929) was a British novelist and writer on India. Married to a member of the Indian Civil Service, she lived for more than twenty years in the Punjab, where she learned the local languages, worked for the education of girls and became an inspector of schools. Her novel On the Face of the Waters, about the rising of 1857, was a best seller, and she wrote many stories of Indian life, a collection of Punjabi folk tales, and, with Grace Gardiner, a popular household manual for English women in India. She later retold English Fairy Tales for children.
