Evelyn Gladys is the name on the title page of Thoughts of a Fool, a book of short first-person essays published in Chicago and London by E. P. Rosenthal and Company in 1905. Nothing certain is known of the author, and the name may be a pseudonym. The book speaks in the voice of a woman who claims the fool's license to question respectability, success, democracy, religion, occultism and the conventions of love and marriage, writing in brief paragraphs that turn received wisdom inside out. Its skeptical and feminist temper places it among the products of the Chicago radical and freethought press at the turn of the century.
