Euripides (c. 480–406 BC) was the youngest of the three great tragic poets of Athens, alongside Aeschylus and Sophocles. He wrote around ninety plays, of which eighteen or nineteen survive, more than for any other Greek tragedian, including Medea, Hippolytus, The Trojan Women, Electra, Iphigenia in Tauris and The Bacchae. His plays bring the gods and heroes of myth close to ordinary human passions, give voice to women, slaves and outsiders, and question traditional beliefs. Less successful in competition than his rivals during his lifetime, he became the most popular tragedian in later antiquity.
