Erwin W. Roessler

Erwin W. Roessler was an American teacher of modern languages who held a doctorate and chaired the Modern Language Department of the High School of Commerce in New York City in the early twentieth century. With his colleague Alfred Remy he compiled A First Spanish Reader, published by the American Book Company, a graded collection of short texts, questions and vocabulary designed so that beginners could read connected Spanish almost from the start of a course. The book's preface sets out the classroom method the two authors used, with reading aloud, chorus work and conversation taking precedence over translation. Roessler also prepared textbooks for the teaching of German.
