Emma Goldman (1869–1940) was a Lithuanian-born anarchist writer and lecturer. She emigrated to the United States in 1885, worked in garment factories and was converted to anarchism by the Haymarket executions. For thirty years she toured the country speaking on anarchism, free speech, birth control, women's emancipation and the modern drama, was imprisoned several times, and edited the journal Mother Earth. Anarchism and Other Essays appeared in 1910. Deported to Russia in 1919 with Alexander Berkman, she left disillusioned and recorded her judgment in My Disillusionment in Russia; her autobiography Living My Life was published in 1931. She died in Toronto after supporting the Spanish anarchists.
