Elizabeth Bisland

Elizabeth Bisland (1861–1929) was an American journalist and author. Raised in Louisiana on a plantation ruined by the Civil War, she began writing for the New Orleans Times-Democrat, where she met Lafcadio Hearn, and moved to New York in 1887 to work for magazines. In 1889 Cosmopolitan sent her around the world, traveling westward, in a race against Nellie Bly of the New York World; she completed the journey in seventy-six days, narrowly losing, and described it in A Flying Trip Around the World. She later married the lawyer Charles Wetmore and edited The Life and Letters of Lafcadio Hearn.
