Edwin Sidney Hartland (1848–1927) was an English folklorist and anthropologist who earned his living as a solicitor in Gloucester. A leading member of the Folklore Society, of which he served as president, he applied comparative methods to popular traditions and customs. The Science of Fairy Tales (1891) studied stories of fairy births, changelings and the supernatural passage of time; The Legend of Perseus, in three volumes, traced one tale type across the world; and Primitive Paternity examined beliefs about birth and kinship. He also edited English Fairy and Other Folk Tales.
