Edward Everett Hale (1822–1909) was an American author and Unitarian minister. Born in Boston, a nephew of the orator Edward Everett and a great-nephew of the revolutionary Nathan Hale, he served for decades as minister of the South Congregational Church in Boston. His story The Man Without a Country (1863), about an officer condemned to live at sea without ever hearing his country's name, was written to stir loyalty during the Civil War and became an American classic. He wrote dozens of other books, including Stories of Adventure, and was chaplain of the United States Senate from 1903.
