E. W. Hornung (1866–1921), Ernest William Hornung, was an English novelist best known as the creator of A. J. Raffles, the gentleman cricketer and burglar. As a young man he spent two years in Australia for his health, and the Australian bush furnished settings for many of his novels and stories, including Stingaree. He married Constance Doyle, sister of Arthur Conan Doyle, to whom the first Raffles collection, The Amateur Cracksman, was dedicated. His only son was killed in the First World War, and Hornung himself worked with the YMCA in France.
