E. V. Lucas

Edward Verrall Lucas (1868–1938) was an English essayist, editor and publisher. Apprenticed to a bookseller in Brighton, he became a journalist, joined the staff of Punch in 1904 and was for many years chairman of the publishing house Methuen. He edited the works and letters of Charles Lamb and wrote his standard biography (1905), produced a long series of leisurely travel books beginning with A Wanderer in Holland, novels such as Over Bemerton's, anthologies and more than thirty volumes of essays. A Cat Book (1927), written for Pat Sullivan's drawings, is one of several small books that show his fondness for the animal.
