Edward Theodore Chalmers Werner (1864–1954) was a British consular officer and sinologist. Born in New Zealand and educated in England, he joined the China Consular Service in 1884 and spent thirty years in posts across the country, ending as consul at Foochow, before retiring to Peking to write. His books include Descriptive Sociology: Chinese, Myths and Legends of China, A Dictionary of Chinese Mythology and Chinese Weapons. In 1937 his adopted daughter Pamela was murdered in Peking, a case never solved that he investigated obsessively for the rest of his life. He remained in China through the Japanese occupation and died there at ninety.
