Edward Payson Evans (1831–1917) was an American scholar of languages and cultural history. After teaching modern languages at the University of Michigan, he moved to Munich in 1870 and lived in Germany for some thirty years, writing for German and American periodicals. His interest in the relations between humans and animals produced Animal Symbolism in Ecclesiastical Architecture (1896), Evolutional Ethics and Animal Psychology (1897) and The Criminal Prosecution and Capital Punishment of Animals (1906), which gathered records of trials of pigs, rats, insects and other creatures. He was an early advocate of moral consideration for animals.
